MEMSA Race Reading Group
We invite you to join us for the first meeting of the Medieval and Early Modern Student Association (MEMSA) and Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (CMRS) co-sponsored Race Reading Group that will explore a variety of scholarly research on pre-modern race. The first meeting will be held virtually over Zoom on August 26, 2021. The group is open to UCLA students and faculty and meetings will focus on the discussion of one reading (an article or selections from a monograph) for around one hour. David Nirenberg’s article “Was There Race before Modernity?” will be the subject of our first meeting. Please register here.
We hope to crowdsource our future reading list from participants and would be grateful for your recommendations submitted through this survey form. We also hope to be able to have our subsequent meetings in-person on the UCLA campus about once a month during the Fall Quarter. More details on those future meetings will be sent soon.
Organizers: Andrew Smith (NELC), Stefanie Matabang (Comparative Literature), Patrick Morgan (History), Richard Ibarra (History)
