UCLA CMRS-CEGS Graduate Recruitment Fellowships

CMRS-CEGS Graduate Recruitment Fellowships provide departments and interdepartmental programs with another tool for attracting highly qualified, new graduate students to UCLA. The prospective student must have expressed a commitment to study some aspect of early global studies, defined broadly as any topic or discipline pertaining to the periods from the third to the mid-seventeenth century. The purpose of the award, which is added to a student’s offer for their first year, is to enhance UCLA’s competitiveness for the most highly recruited graduate students.

Three Graduate Recruitment Fellowships of $10,000 each will be awarded for graduate students who would be newly admitted to UCLA in Fall 2025. The fellowship would be added to the financial offer made by the student’s admitting department or program for academic year 2025-26.

UCLA departments or interdepartmental programs with one or more CMRS-CEGS faculty members who could potentially serve as the student’s advisor are eligible to nominate students. Up to two prospective students may be nominated by each department/program.

Nomination Process: To nominate a prospective student for the award, the SAO or Graduate Advisor should submit the following materials:

    1. The student’s complete application package (as a pdf), including copies of transcripts, personal statements, and letters of recommendation.
    2. A short paragraph from the department/program Chair or Graduate Adviser explaining the reason for the student’s nomination. This paragraph may be included in the email message to which the application package is attached.

Submission & Deadline: These materials should be submitted by email to CMRS-CEGS Director Zrinka Stahuljak zs@humnet.ucla.edu by Monday, February 24, 2025 at 5:00 pm.

SAOs and/or Graduate Advisors and the Department/Program Chair will be notified of their nominee(s)’s status by the middle of March. SAOs/Graduate Advisors should then be prepared to notify prospective students of their award via the central funding letter for admitted students, as per UCLA DGE policy. Funding for the award will be transferred by CMRS-CEGS to the department/program after the student accepts the admission offer. If the student ultimately does not come to UCLA or as soon as the student declines the offer of admission, the funding must be returned to CMRS-CEGS.

Recipients of this award will be named CMRS-CEGS Graduate Fellows and have a summary of their research interests featured on the CMRS-CEGS website. They will be required to submit a one-page summary describing how this award benefited their research and education during the academic year 2025–2026.
