Zoom Meeting, Online + Google Map

Stefanie Matabang, Graduate Student, Department of Comparative Literature, UCLA

“Making the Middle Ages Filipino: Colonial Philippines and the Imagined Medieval Period of Empire”

CMRS is hosting twice-monthly Works-in-Progress Happy Hours to promote intellectual exchange and collegiality while most of us are continuing to work and learn remotely. The Happy Hours are open to UCLA faculty and graduate students and consist of a short informal presentation followed by open discussion.

Stefanie Matabang received her B.A. at UC Berkeley with a Double Major in English and Celtic Studies. She is not a Doctoral Candidate yet (will likely defend in February). Her dissertation will explore the reception and utilization of the European Middle Ages in the postcolonial Philippines in literature and film spanning the Spanish colonial period (beginning early sixteenth century) to the American colonial period (to mid-twentieth century). Her goal is to contribute to burgeoning discourse surrounding medievalism in Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Her research interests include postcolonial medievalism, the Global Middle Ages, nationalism, orientalism, world literature, transmission and reception, postcolonial and decolonial theory, Middle Welsh literature, Arthuriana.

Open to faculty and graduate students. Invitations to register for the Zoom link will be sent by email.
