We are pleased to announce the publication of the article “How Early Before It Is Too Late? “Medieval” Periodization, Epistemic Change, and the Institution” in our journal, Viator. The article, initially a talk delivered by UCLA CMRS Center for Early Global Studies (CMRS–CEGS) Director Zrinka Stahuljak as a plenary address at the 99th Annual Meeting of the Medieval Academy of America, cross-examines the epistemological foundations of “medieval studies” and highlights a pathway away from Eurocentric periodization through a model of strategic comparison with Indigenous philosophies.

The article also discusses a potential path toward the “early global” in institutional and scholarly terms relating to the work done by CMRS-CEGS in developing a research platform enabling the study of early historical periods in a worldwide context.
